As the Friends Seminary Owls kick off another thrilling year of basketball, the boys are hungry for success. Coach Adam Cash is starting his second year at the helm of the Boys Varsity team following Coach David Lieber’s departure at the end of the 2022-2023 season, and after an intense end to last season, the Owls are primed to reach even higher heights in 2024-25 season.
Last year, in a thrilling victory over Dwight back on February 16, the Owls capped an outstanding season as ACIS Champions, qualifying for the prestigious NYSAIS Tournament. In the quarterfinals, the Owls hosted Packer at Grace Church. The game was a back-and-forth battle, with Friends trailing for most of the contest. Showing their tenacity, the Owls tied the game with .3 seconds left and pulled off a nail-biter win in overtime. The final score was 55-49, advancing them to the NYSAIS semifinals.
In the semifinals, Friends faced Collegiate. After a tight match, the Owls fell to a disheartening buzzer-beater. Nevertheless, the boys left the 2023 season as ACIS champions and put up a commendable effort all season. Looking into 2024, they are poised to return to the NYSAIS Tournament stronger than ever. If the Owls match the pure grit they displayed throughout last season, they should be in for a bright future.
On Monday, November 18, the Owls kicked the new season off with a scrimmage against LREI. It was a strong showing for the Owls as they won 95-55. Their chemistry built over the last couple seasons and first few weeks of practice was evident, while Coach Adam’s emphasis on defense and ball movement was already beginning to take shape. Though it was just a scrimmage, the Owls’ performance underlined how ready they are for the upcoming season.
Now, the Owls are more than halfway through their season. With a 15-2 record in NYSAIS, the Owls are the team to beat. Just last week, the Owls faced Avenues. This game was an intense matchup, as the Aviators have always been a tough, physical team. The Owls secured the victory, winning 44-39. Looking ahead, the Owls are prepared to keep winning, bringing the intensity to each game.
